In the past ten years, in order to avoid relying on a single economic model that is based on oil, the UAE has emphasized the importance of economic green transformation from top to bottom, from setting performance indicators to encouraging the development of sustainable financial markets, and has become a model country in the Gulf region to practice sustainable development. Although the UAE’s ESG policy has not yet initiated mandatory requirements for companies, and the effect of the policy is more focused on the development of clean energy, the UAE’s active international participation and investment demonstrates its determination to achieve comprehensive sustainable development.


In general, the UAE’s ESG policies and regulations have the following characteristics:
  1. Policies and financial tools together as drivers to promote the energy transition

  2. The energy transition is closely integrated with national development needs

  3. Responding to international initiatives and carrying out multi-party learning

  4. Implementing the national strategy according to local conditions, without losing the agenda

  5. From central to local, national strategy drives local policies

  6. Focus on public-private cooperation and promote sustainable development

  7. ESG policy is at a nascent stage and lacks support for social-related policies

  8. The sustainable finance market has yet to be developed, and green Islamic bonds have the potential to be tapped into
